Can a true believer lose salvation? This card's position is that those who truly belong to Christ are kept by God's power, and genuine faith shows itself by enduring. Jesus says in : 'My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.' The Father also holds them, and 'no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.' Believers are held in a double grip.
says believers 'are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.' The word 'kept' is a military term for a garrison guarding a city. God guards His people, and He does it 'through faith': He keeps them believing. shows an unbroken chain: those God foreknew, predestined, called, and justified, He also glorified. No one drops out. says nothing in all creation can separate us from God's love in Christ. promises that God will complete the good work He began.
What about warning passages such as and 10:26-29? Many Bible teachers understand these as describing people who were close to the truth and shared in church life but never truly trusted Christ, or as the means God uses to keep true believers persevering. explains that some who leave 'went out from us, but they were not of us.' Jesus spoke of people who called Him 'Lord' but whom He 'never knew' (). Christians hold different views on these passages, so teach them with care and charity.
Assurance is not permission to sin. asks, 'Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not!' A person who claims faith but shows no love for Christ or desire for holiness should examine himself (). Endurance is the evidence of real faith (; ), and God produces that endurance in His children.
Why it matters: Salvation that depends on our grip would leave us anxious. Salvation that depends on God's grip gives peace, gratitude, and courage. Encourage struggling believers that God will not let go of them, and challenge careless professors to make sure their faith is real.
Scripture context & word study
KEY WORDS:
• ou mē apolōntai (Greek, οὐ μὴ ἀπόλωνται) — 'shall never perish' (). A double negative (ou mē) is the strongest way to deny something in Greek: 'shall by no means ever perish.'
• harpazō (Greek, ἁρπάζω) — 'to snatch, seize by force' (), used of wolves attacking sheep (10:12).
• zōē aiōnios (Greek, ζωὴ αἰώνιος) — 'eternal life' (). It is the life of the age to come, given now and never ending.
• phroureō (Greek, φρουρέω) — 'to guard, keep as a garrison' (), a military word for soldiers guarding a city.
• dynamis (Greek, δύναμις) — 'power' (), the root of 'dynamite.' God's power is what keeps us.
• hypomonē (Greek, ὑπομονή) — 'endurance, patient perseverance' (; ), literally 'remaining under' a load.
• sphragizō (Greek, σφραγίζω) — 'to seal' (; 4:30), God's mark of ownership that secures believers 'for the day of redemption.'
• ra'ah (Hebrew, רָעָה) — 'to shepherd, tend' (, 'The LORD is my shepherd'). The Good Shepherd image in John 10 builds on Psalm 23 and Ezekiel 34.
CONTEXT: John 10 is the Good Shepherd discourse, given at the Feast of Dedication (Hanukkah) in winter (10:22). Jesus contrasts Himself with false shepherds (the religious leaders). 1 Peter was written to believers facing persecution across Asia Minor, reminding them their inheritance is secure (1:4).
Real-world use
Use when someone asks: 'Can salvation be lost?' in a church discussion, workplace conversation, youth setting, online comment, family conversation, or apologetics setting.
Common objection
“If you believe once-saved-always-saved, then people will just live however they want and still claim to go to heaven.”
Response strategy
Agree that this is a real danger and that Scripture warns against it (; ). Clarify that the teaching is not 'once prayed, always saved' but that God keeps those who truly belong to Him, and He changes them. Show : Christ's sheep 'follow Me.' Point to 1 John as a letter of tests: love for God, obedience, and love for others. Real assurance and real holiness go together.

Discussion questions & answers
1. What does promise to Christ's sheep?
Answer: They hear His voice, He knows them, they follow Him, He gives them eternal life, they will never perish, and no one can snatch them from the Son's or the Father's hand.
2. How does describe the way God keeps believers?
Answer: They are guarded like a city with a garrison by God's power, 'through faith.' God keeps us by keeping us trusting Him until the final salvation is revealed.
3. How should we understand people who once professed faith and then walked away?
Answer: says some who leave were never truly part of the family. Only God knows hearts, so we should pray for them, pursue them lovingly, and call them back to Christ.
4. Does assurance of salvation encourage careless living?
Answer: Not when understood rightly. God's grace trains us to say no to ungodliness (). Those truly secure in Christ grow in love for Him and desire to please Him.
5. How can you encourage someone who fears they have lost their salvation?
Answer: Point them to Christ's promises (; 10:28), not their feelings. The fact that they care about their relationship with God is often a sign of the Spirit's work. Encourage confession () and renewed trust.
