Full teaching study

Salvation is God's rescue of sinners from sin's penalty, power, and eventually its presence. gives the clearest summary: 'For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.' Grace is the source (God's undeserved favor), faith is the means (trusting Christ), and Christ is the object. Works are not the cause of salvation, though they follow it (). The need is real. says 'all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,' and says 'the wages of sin is death.' describes people apart from Christ as 'dead in trespasses and sins' and 'by nature children of wrath.' A dead person cannot save himself; he needs new life from God (). God provided what we could not. Jesus lived the perfect life we failed to live, died in our place bearing our sins (; ), and rose again, proving the payment was accepted (). The gospel is 'Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures... was buried... and rose again the third day' (). describes the human response: 'If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.' Believing is the heart trusting Christ; confessing is the mouth openly declaring Him as Lord. This is not a magic formula but the natural expression of genuine faith. Repentance, turning from sin to God, goes together with faith (; ). Why it matters: Salvation by grace removes both pride and despair. No one is good enough to earn it, and no one is too bad to receive it. When sharing the gospel, keep it clear: God is holy, we have sinned, Christ died and rose for sinners, and we receive Him by repentance and faith. Invite a response and trust the Spirit to do His work.

Scripture context & word study

KEY WORDS: • charis (Greek, χάρις) — 'grace' (), God's undeserved favor and kindness given freely to those who deserve the opposite. • sōzō (Greek, σῴζω) — 'to save, rescue, heal, make whole' (). 'Have been saved' (sesōsmenoi) is a perfect tense, meaning a completed act with lasting results. • pistis (Greek, πίστις) — 'faith, trust, reliance' (). It means trusting a person, not just agreeing with facts. • dōron (Greek, δῶρον) — 'gift' (). A gift is received, not earned. • ergon (Greek, ἔργον) — 'work, deed' (). Not the basis of salvation, but its result ('created in Christ Jesus for good works'). • kauchaomai (Greek, καυχάομαι) — 'to boast' (). Grace removes all human bragging. • homologeō (Greek, ὁμολογέω) — 'to confess, agree, declare openly' (), literally 'to say the same thing' as God says about Jesus. • Kyrios Iēsous (Greek, Κύριος Ἰησοῦς) — 'Jesus is Lord' (), one of the earliest Christian confessions and a direct challenge to 'Caesar is Lord.' • yeshuah (Hebrew, יְשׁוּעָה) — 'salvation, deliverance' (e.g., ; ). The name Jesus (Yeshua) means 'YHWH saves' (). CONTEXT: Ephesians 2 contrasts who we were (dead, enslaved, under wrath, vv. 1-3) with what God did ('But God,' v. 4). Romans 10 comes in Paul's discussion of Israel, showing that righteousness comes by faith in Christ for both Jew and Gentile (10:12-13).

Real-world use

Use when someone asks: 'How is a person saved?' in a church discussion, workplace conversation, youth setting, online comment, family conversation, or apologetics setting.

Common objection

“If I'm a good person and try my best, God will let me into heaven.”

Response strategy

Gently ask, 'How good is good enough?' Use God's standard, not ours: the Ten Commandments or Jesus' teaching on the heart (). Show and . Then share the good news: salvation is a gift, not a wage (; ). Illustrate with a courtroom: a judge cannot ignore crimes because of good deeds, but someone else can pay the fine. Invite them to trust Christ rather than their record.

Discussion questions & answers

1. What are the roles of grace, faith, and Christ in ? Answer: Grace is the source of salvation (God's undeserved favor). Faith is the means by which we receive it (trust). Christ is the object and the one who accomplished it through His death and resurrection. 2. Why can't works save us? Answer: All have sinned (), and good deeds cannot erase guilt (). If works saved us, we could boast and Christ would have died for nothing (). 3. What does it mean to 'confess Jesus as Lord'? Answer: To openly declare that Jesus is God and Master of your life. In Rome, 'Caesar is Lord' was the required confession, so saying 'Jesus is Lord' was costly and meant real allegiance. 4. How do repentance and faith fit together? Answer: They are two sides of one turning: repentance turns from sin, and faith turns to Christ (; ). You cannot truly trust Christ while clinging to sin as your master. 5. How would you explain the gospel in under a minute? Answer: Sample: 'God made us and is holy. We have all sinned and deserve judgment. God sent Jesus, who lived perfectly, died for our sins, and rose again. If you turn from sin and trust Him, God forgives you and gives you eternal life as a free gift.'

Faithful application

Speak truth without arrogance; use Scripture directly; invite the person to consider what the text actually says.
