Full teaching study

Repentance is a Spirit-enabled change of mind and heart that turns a person from sin to God. It is more than feeling sorry. says, 'Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.' Repentance involves the mind (seeing sin as God sees it), the heart (hating sin and grieving over it), and the will (turning from it to God). draws an important contrast: 'Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.' Worldly sorrow is sorrow over consequences, such as getting caught or losing reputation. Judas felt remorse but did not turn to God (). Godly sorrow grieves because sin offends God, and it leads to real change. Peter wept bitterly after denying Jesus and was restored (; ). Repentance was central to the preaching of John the Baptist (), Jesus (), and the apostles (; 17:30; 20:21). It is not a work that earns salvation; it is a gift God grants (; ). It goes together with faith: you cannot turn to Christ without turning from sin, and you cannot truly turn from sin without turning to Christ. Repentance produces fruit. John said, 'Bear fruits worthy of repentance' (). Zacchaeus showed this when he gave to the poor and repaid those he cheated fourfold (). Real repentance often includes confession (), making things right when possible, and new patterns of life. It is also ongoing: Martin Luther's first thesis said the whole life of believers should be one of repentance. Why it matters: Many people want forgiveness without change, and others think they must fix themselves first. Scripture says come as you are, but come turning. Repentance is a doorway to joy and 'times of refreshing' (), not a punishment. Teach it with both seriousness about sin and warmth about God's mercy.

Scripture context & word study

KEY WORDS: • metanoeō (Greek, μετανοέω) — 'to repent,' literally 'to change the mind' (). In Scripture it means a whole-life change of direction, not just an idea. • metanoia (Greek, μετάνοια) — 'repentance' (). • epistrephō (Greek, ἐπιστρέφω) — 'to turn around, be converted' (). A physical turning pictures the spiritual reality. • exaleiphō (Greek, ἐξαλείφω) — 'to wipe out, blot out' (), like erasing writing from a wax tablet. • lypē kata theon (Greek, λύπη κατὰ θεόν) — 'godly sorrow,' literally 'sorrow according to God' (), grief that sees sin as God sees it. • ametamelētos (Greek, ἀμεταμέλητος) — 'not to be regretted' (). Godly repentance leaves no regrets. • metamelomai (Greek, μεταμέλομαι) — 'to regret, feel remorse' (, Judas). Regret without true turning. • shuv (Hebrew, שׁוּב) — 'to turn, return' (; ), the main Old Testament word for repentance, used over 1,000 times. • nacham (Hebrew, נָחַם) — 'to be sorry, relent, be comforted' (), the emotional side of repentance. CONTEXT: Acts 3 follows the healing of a lame man at the temple gate. Peter preaches to the crowd who had rejected Jesus and calls them to repent. 2 Corinthians 7 describes the Corinthians' response to Paul's earlier painful letter; their sorrow led to real change (7:11).

Real-world use

Use when someone asks: 'What is repentance?' in a church discussion, workplace conversation, youth setting, online comment, family conversation, or apologetics setting.

Common objection

“Repentance means I have to clean up my life before God will accept me.”

Response strategy

Clarify that repentance is not self-improvement but turning to God for mercy. The prodigal son came home in rags and was embraced by his father before he had fixed anything (). God grants repentance () and gives power to change (). Invite the person to come honestly, turning from sin to Christ, and let God do the cleansing ().

Discussion questions & answers

1. What is the difference between regret and repentance? Answer: Regret (worldly sorrow) is sadness over consequences and often leads to despair (Judas). Repentance (godly sorrow) is grief over offending God that leads to turning from sin to Him (Peter). 2. What three parts of a person are involved in repentance? Answer: The mind (seeing sin as God sees it), the heart (grieving over and hating sin), and the will (turning from sin to God and obeying Him). 3. Is repentance a work that earns salvation? Answer: No. It is a gift God grants (; ) and the response to His grace, not payment for it. We are saved by grace through faith, and repentance and faith come together. 4. What are 'fruits worthy of repentance'? Answer: Changed behavior that shows real turning, such as confession, making restitution (Zacchaeus, ), breaking sinful habits, reconciling with others, and new obedience. 5. Why is repentance a lifelong practice for believers? Answer: Believers still sin (). Daily repentance keeps our fellowship with God close and our hearts soft. It is the normal rhythm of Christian growth, not a one-time event only.

Faithful application

Speak truth without arrogance; use Scripture directly; invite the person to consider what the text actually says.
