The Trinity is not a math problem that says 1 = 3. It says God is one in one sense (being or essence) and three in a different sense (persons). There is one 'What' (the divine nature) and three 'Whos' (Father, Son, and Spirit). A contradiction would say God is one being and three beings, or one person and three persons, at the same time and in the same sense. The Trinity says neither.
(the Shema) is Israel's core confession: 'Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!' The New Testament never denies this; Jesus quotes it as the greatest commandment (). What the New Testament does is reveal more about who this one God is. The apostles, who were strict monotheists, came to worship Jesus and experience the Spirit as God, without believing in more than one God.
At Jesus' baptism (), all three persons appear at once. The Son is baptized, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven. This rules out modalism, the idea that one person switches between three masks or roles. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father, yet each is fully God.
It also helps to avoid common mistakes. Each person is not one-third of God; each is fully God, possessing the whole divine nature. The persons are not three separate gods who cooperate like a committee. They share one will and one being, and they are distinguished by their relationships: the Father begets, the Son is begotten, and the Spirit proceeds (; 15:26).
We should honestly admit mystery. A God we could fully explain would be no bigger than our minds (). But mystery is not contradiction. We believe this because God has revealed it, not because we can picture it. Teach it with humility and wonder, and use it to lead people to worship.
Scripture context & word study
KEY WORDS:
• echad (Hebrew, אֶחָד) — 'one' (). It can describe a united oneness, as in 'one flesh' () and 'one cluster' (). This should not be overpressed, but it fits the doctrine.
• shema (Hebrew, שְׁמַע) — 'hear' (), meaning to listen and obey. The name of Israel's daily confession of faith.
• YHWH (Hebrew, יהוה) — the covenant name of God, rendered 'LORD' in capitals. The Shema names YHWH twice.
• ousia (Greek, οὐσία) — 'being, essence.' A theological term from the Nicene era for what God is. There is one ousia.
• hypostasis (Greek, ὑπόστασις) — 'person, subsistence.' uses it of God's 'nature.' Later theology used it for the three persons.
• homoousios (Greek, ὁμοούσιος) — 'of the same being,' the key word of the Nicene Creed (AD 325), affirming that the Son is fully God with the Father.
• agapētos (Greek, ἀγαπητός) — 'beloved' (). The Father's eternal love for the Son.
• eudokeō (Greek, εὐδοκέω) — 'to be well pleased' (). The Father's delight in the Son.
CONTEXT: Deuteronomy 6 is Moses' charge to Israel before entering Canaan, a land full of many gods. The Shema set Israel apart. Matthew 3 is the opening of Jesus' public ministry. The Father's words combine ('You are My Son') and ('in whom My soul delights'), identifying Jesus as the royal Son and the Servant.
Real-world use
Use when someone asks: 'How can one God be three persons?' in a church discussion, workplace conversation, youth setting, online comment, family conversation, or apologetics setting.
Common objection
“One God in three persons is illogical, since 1+1+1 = 3, not 1.”
Response strategy
Explain the difference between being and person. The formula is not 1 God = 3 Gods, but 1 being shared fully by 3 persons. Explain that each person is not one-third of God; each is fully God, and the persons are not divided. Use to show all three present at once. Admit mystery honestly, and note that the doctrine comes from revelation, not speculation.

Discussion questions & answers
1. What is the difference between 'being' and 'person'?
Answer: Being is what something is (its nature); person is who someone is (a personal 'I' who relates to others). God has one being (one What) and three persons (three Whos).
2. Why does Jesus' baptism rule out the idea of one person switching roles?
Answer: All three appear at the same moment and interact: the Son in the water, the Spirit descending, the Father speaking to the Son. One person cannot be in three places and speak to Himself as another.
3. How is mystery different from contradiction?
Answer: A contradiction says something is and is not in the same sense (e.g., one God and three Gods). A mystery is something true that is beyond our full understanding. The Trinity is a mystery, not a contradiction.
4. Why is it comforting that God is greater than our understanding?
Answer: A God small enough to fully understand would be too small to trust with our lives and eternity. His greatness means He is able to save, keep, and guide us (; ).
5. Practice explaining 'one What, three Whos' to a partner.
Answer: Sample: 'God is one in His nature, what He is, and three in persons, who He is. The Father, Son, and Spirit each fully share the one divine nature, and they are distinct in their relationships with each other.'
Faithful application
Speak truth without arrogance; use Scripture directly; invite the person to consider what the text actually says.
