Jesus claimed deity in words and actions, using categories that first-century Jews would understand. In He said, 'Before Abraham was, I AM,' taking the divine name God revealed to Moses (). His listeners understood Him and picked up stones to punish Him for blasphemy (). In He said, 'I and My Father are one,' and again they reached for stones 'because You, being a Man, make Yourself God' (). His actions matched His words. He forgave sins committed against others, and the scribes rightly said, 'Who can forgive sins but God alone?' (). He accepted worship (; ), although angels and apostles refused worship (; ). He claimed authority to judge all people and said all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father (). He said He shared the Father's glory before the world began (). At His trial He applied and to Himself, and the high priest tore his robes (). The apostles confirmed His claims. Thomas confessed, 'My Lord and my God!' (), and Jesus accepted it and blessed those who would believe the same. Paul wrote that 'in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily' () and called Him 'our great God and Savior' (). has the Father address the Son as 'O God.' This is the heart of C.S. Lewis's argument in Mere Christianity: Jesus did not leave open the option of being merely a good moral teacher. A man who says what Jesus said is either lying, deeply deluded, or telling the truth. His character, His miracles, and above all His resurrection () show that He is Lord. Why it matters: If Jesus is God, His words carry God's full authority, His death has infinite worth, and His promises cannot fail. When talking with others, gently move the discussion from 'Was Jesus a good man?' to 'Who did Jesus say He was?'

Scripture context & word study

KEY WORDS: • egō eimi (Greek, ἐγώ εἰμι) — 'I am.' In it is present tense, set against 'before Abraham was' (genesthai, 'came into being'). This echoes the Greek Old Testament of and . • YHWH / 'ehyeh (Hebrew, יהוה / אֶהְיֶה) — the divine name, 'I AM WHO I AM' (), linked to the verb 'to be.' It points to God's self-existence. • kyrios (Greek, κύριος) — 'Lord.' The Greek Old Testament used it to translate YHWH, so calling Jesus 'Lord' in worship carries divine weight. • theos (Greek, θεός) — 'God.' In Thomas says 'ho theos mou' ('my God') directly to Jesus ('said to Him'). • theotēs (Greek, θεότης) — 'deity, Godhead' (). It means the divine nature itself, a stronger word than theiotēs ('divine quality,' ). • plērōma (Greek, πλήρωμα) — 'fullness' (). False teachers in Colossae may have used this word for spiritual powers; Paul says all of God's fullness is in Christ. • proskyneō (Greek, προσκυνέω) — 'to worship, bow down' (; 28:9). Jesus accepts this, while angels and apostles refuse it. • blasphēmia (Greek, βλασφημία) — 'blasphemy,' the charge against Jesus (; ). His enemies understood His claim to deity. CONTEXT: John 8 takes place at the Feast of Tabernacles in the temple courts. Jesus debates religious leaders who appeal to Abraham. Colossians was written to a church facing a teaching that made Christ one spiritual power among many; Paul answers by exalting His full deity.

Real-world use

Use when someone asks: 'Did Jesus claim deity?' in a church discussion, workplace conversation, youth setting, online comment, family conversation, or apologetics setting.

Common objection

“Jesus never said the exact words, "I am God, worship me."”

Response strategy

Point out that first-century Jews did not speak that way; Jesus used Jewish categories that were even stronger: the divine name (I AM), forgiving sins against God, receiving worship, and claiming to be the final Judge. His enemies understood His claim (; 10:33). Ask: 'What would Jesus have had to say to convince you, and did He do something equivalent?'

Discussion questions & answers

1. Why did the crowd pick up stones in ? Answer: They understood 'Before Abraham was, I AM' as a claim to the divine name (). Under the Law, blasphemy was punished by stoning (). 2. Which of Jesus' actions only make sense if He is God? Answer: Forgiving sins against others (), accepting worship (), claiming to judge all people (), and saying He shared God's glory before creation (). 3. Why is it significant that Jesus did not correct Thomas? Answer: Jesus corrected false ideas elsewhere, and godly people refused worship (; ). By accepting 'my God' and blessing future believers (), Jesus confirmed the confession. 4. Why is 'just a good teacher' not an option? Answer: A good teacher would not falsely claim to be God. If His claims are false, He is not good; if they are true, He is Lord. The resurrection confirms His claims (). 5. How does Jesus' deity give you confidence in His promises? Answer: God cannot lie (). Because Jesus is God, promises like eternal life () and His presence () are fully reliable.
