Misused Scripture

DISC-005

God Won't Give You More Than You Can Handle

Common misunderstanding

People quote this to mean life will never overwhelm a believer.

Read the context

Paul is talking about temptation and God's faithfulness to provide a way of escape from sin.

Guided thinking questions

Is the verse about temptation or general suffering? Did Paul ever say he was burdened beyond strength? What is the promised way out?

Key-word study

Temptation means testing toward sin. The promise concerns escape from sinful compromise.

Cultural context

The Corinthian church was surrounded by idolatry and moral temptation. Paul warns them not to presume they are too strong to fall.

Cross-Scripture balance

says Paul was burdened beyond his strength so he would rely on God.

Where this issue appears

Used to minimize grief, depression, pressure, or suffering by telling people they should be able to handle it.

Correct interpretation

God limits temptation and provides a way of escape. Life itself may still overwhelm us and drive us to depend on God.

Faithful application

When tempted, look for God's way out. When overwhelmed, admit need and lean on God and the body of Christ.
