Misused Scripture

DISC-002

I Can Do All Things Through Christ

Common misunderstanding

People often use this as a success slogan that means Christ will help them win, achieve, or accomplish anything they want.

Read the context

Paul is writing about contentment through hunger, need, abundance, and hardship. He is not describing unlimited achievement.

Guided thinking questions

What circumstances does Paul describe before verse 13? Is Paul talking about winning or enduring? What has Christ strengthened him to handle?

Key-word study

'All things' refers to the situations Paul just listed: lack, abundance, hunger, and hardship.

Cultural context

Paul's prison context matters. This was not a motivational stage speech. It was a testimony of endurance under pressure.

Cross-Scripture balance

2 Corinthians 11 shows Paul endured beatings, danger, hunger, and pressure. The strength of Christ did not remove suffering; it sustained him in it.

Where this issue appears

Used before sports, business goals, or personal dreams as if Christ guarantees success.

Correct interpretation

Christ gives strength to endure every condition God allows, not a blank check to succeed at everything.

Faithful application

Use this verse when teaching contentment, endurance, and dependence on Christ in hard seasons.
