Misused Scripture

DISC-016

Where Two or Three Are Gathered

Common misunderstanding

Often quoted to say God is only present when at least two or three believers gather.

Read the context

Jesus is teaching about church discipline, witnesses, binding and loosing, and authority in serious church matters.

Guided thinking questions

What issue begins in verse 15? Why are two or three witnesses mentioned? Is this about attendance or accountability?

Key-word study

Gathered in His name means acting under His authority, not simply being in the same room.

Cultural context

Jewish legal practice required witnesses to establish serious matters.

Cross-Scripture balance

1 Corinthians 5 shows the church acting in the name and authority of the Lord Jesus in discipline.

Where this issue appears

Used as a comfort line for small attendance while missing the discipline context.

Correct interpretation

Jesus promises His authority and presence when the church acts faithfully under His name in accountability.

Faithful application

Use this verse when teaching church order, correction, and authority.
