Overview
2 John is a concise warning that truth and love belong together. The church must walk in love, remain in Christ's teaching, and exercise discernment about whom it supports in ministry.
Author and Setting
Author: The writer identifies himself as 'the elder.' The letter has traditionally been associated with the apostle John and closely reflects the language and theology of 1 John.
Setting: A brief pastoral letter addressed to 'the elect lady and her children,' language understood either of a Christian woman and her household or of a local congregation and its members. False teachers were traveling among churches and denying the true teaching about Jesus Christ.
Purpose
To unite truth and love while warning believers not to support teachers who deny the apostolic doctrine of Christ.

Christ in the Book
The letter centers discernment on the true confession of Jesus Christ coming in the flesh. Christian love is never separated from truth about Christ, and fidelity to His teaching establishes the boundary for Christian partnership.
Practical Application
Biblical love is not undiscerning approval. Christians are called to love one another while refusing to lend ministry support or credibility to teaching that abandons the apostolic truth about Christ.
