The Holy Spirit and the Believer

The Spirit's work in remembrance, guidance, transformation, witness, and the believer's continuing dependence on Scripture.

Teaching introduction

The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force. Scripture presents Him as divine and personal, actively involved in conviction, regeneration, indwelling, teaching, sanctification, witness, prayer, and the life of the church.

is part of Jesus' preparation of His disciples for His departure. The Spirit would teach them and bring Jesus' words to their remembrance.

1. The Spirit glorifies Christ

Jesus says in that the Spirit will guide into truth and glorify Christ. Genuine ministry of the Holy Spirit directs attention toward Jesus rather than toward spiritual personalities, novelty, or spectacle.

The Spirit never competes with the Son. His work applies and illuminates the truth of Christ.

2. The Spirit indwells believers

teaches that those who belong to Christ have the Spirit of Christ. First Corinthians 6:19 describes the believer's body as the temple of the Holy Ghost.

This means Christian life is not self-powered moral improvement. Believers depend on God's Spirit for transformation and faithful living.

3. The Spirit produces character

identifies the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.

Spiritual maturity should therefore be evaluated by character as well as gifting. Dramatic experiences do not excuse pride, dishonesty, cruelty, disorder, or lack of self-control.

4. The Spirit and Scripture belong together

Second Peter 1:20–21 teaches that holy men spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. The Spirit who inspired Scripture does not lead believers to despise or contradict Scripture.

Believers should avoid treating inner impressions as infallible. Guidance should be tested through Scripture, wisdom, prayer, godly counsel, character, and providential circumstances.

5. The Spirit empowers witness and service

connects the Holy Spirit's power with witness to Christ. First Corinthians 12 describes gifts given for the benefit of the body.

Spiritual gifts are not trophies of status. They are forms of grace for service, and they must operate under love, truth, and biblical order.

6. The Spirit helps believers pray

describes the Spirit helping believers in weakness and interceding according to God's will.

This offers comfort when a believer does not know how to pray. Christian prayer depends on God's grace, not verbal perfection.

Key truth

The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ, anchors believers in truth, produces godly character, empowers witness, and enables faithful Christian living. His work never makes Scripture unnecessary.
