Joseph: Trusting God Through Hard Times
; ;
Joseph experienced betrayal, slavery, false accusation, prison, responsibility, and reconciliation. His story helps preteens see that faithfulness matters even when life feels unfair.

KEY VERSE & MEMORY LINE
Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good. Genesis 50:20
What students should learn
- Describe major hardships Joseph experienced.
- Identify ways Joseph remained responsible and faithful.
- Explain the difference between saying evil is good and believing God can work through hardship.
- Apply perseverance, integrity, and forgiveness to real-life situations.
1. Joseph was treated unfairly
Joseph's brothers sold him into slavery. Later, after serving faithfully in Potiphar's house, he was falsely accused and sent to prison.
The Bible does not pretend these events were fair or good. Joseph experienced real wrong.
2. Joseph kept serving faithfully
Genesis 39 repeatedly says that the LORD was with Joseph. Joseph still had responsibilities, and he handled them with integrity.
Faithfulness does not mean we like every circumstance. It means we keep choosing what is right while we seek wise help.
3. God was working over a long period of time
Joseph eventually became a leader in Egypt and helped preserve many lives during famine.
God's work was bigger than what Joseph could see in any single difficult moment.
4. Joseph chose forgiveness instead of revenge
Years later, Joseph's brothers feared he would punish them. Joseph acknowledged that what they had done was evil, but he also recognized God's larger purpose.
Forgiveness does not call wrongdoing good. It means refusing to become controlled by revenge.
5. What can preteens learn from Joseph?
When life feels unfair, young people can tell the truth, ask adults for help, keep good character, pray honestly, and avoid letting bitterness make every decision.
Some problems need adult action. Trusting God is never a reason to stay silent about bullying, abuse, threats, or unsafe situations.
Talk about it
- Which part of Joseph's story seems hardest to you?
- What choices showed Joseph's integrity?
- Why is forgiveness different from pretending nothing wrong happened?
- What should you do if something unfair is also unsafe?
Put it into practice
- Name one hard situation you need wisdom for.
- Choose one right action you can control.
- Talk with a trusted adult if the situation is serious or unsafe.
- Ask God to protect your heart from bitterness.
- Remember that one bad season is not the whole story.
PRAYER
God, help me trust You when life feels unfair. Give me integrity, patience, courage to ask for help, and a heart that does not become controlled by bitterness. Amen.
WEEKLY CHALLENGE
Take the lesson with you.
Keep a seven-day perseverance journal. Each day write one hard thing, one right response you can choose, and one thing you can pray about.
FOR PARENTS & GUARDIANS
Continue the conversation at home.
Your child studied Joseph's long journey through betrayal, hardship, responsibility, and forgiveness.
Ask:
- What part of Joseph's story stood out most?
- What does integrity look like when life feels unfair?
- Is there anything difficult right now that you want help talking through?
Home practice:
Read Genesis 50:20 together. Discuss the difference between saying wrongdoing is acceptable and trusting that God can still work through difficult circumstances.
