Jesus Calms the Storm

BIG TRUTHJesus is with me, and I can trust Him when I am afraid.

Jesus and His disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee when a dangerous storm arose. The disciples were afraid, but Jesus showed that even the wind and sea obey Him.

KEY VERSE & MEMORY LINE

When I am afraid, I can trust God. Psalm 56:3

What students should learn

  • Retell what happened in Mark 4:35–41.
  • Explain why the disciples were afraid.
  • Recognize that Jesus has authority over creation.
  • Name a healthy way to respond when fear feels overwhelming.
  • Practice turning fear into prayer and trust.

1. What happened?

Jesus had been teaching many people. When evening came, He told the disciples, “Let us pass over unto the other side.” They entered a boat and began crossing the sea.

A great storm came up. Waves crashed into the boat, and water began filling it. The disciples were experienced fishermen, but this storm frightened them.

2. Where was Jesus?

Jesus was in the back part of the boat asleep on a pillow. The disciples woke Him and asked whether He cared that they were in danger.

Sometimes fear makes us feel as if God is far away or does not care. The story shows that Jesus was with His disciples even before they understood what He was going to do.

3. Jesus spoke to the storm

Jesus arose, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still.” The wind stopped, and there was a great calm.

The disciples could not control the storm, but Jesus could. His authority over creation helped them see that He was far greater than they had understood.

4. Jesus also spoke to the disciples

Jesus asked why they were so fearful and why they had so little faith. He was teaching them that faith does not mean pretending danger is not real. Faith means learning to trust Him in the middle of what is real.

Children can bring fear to God honestly. We can pray, ask trusted adults for help, remember what Scripture says, and choose not to let fear make every decision.

5. What kinds of storms do children face?

Not every storm has rain and wind. A hard school day, conflict with friends, family changes, sickness, being left out, a scary news story, or worrying about the future can feel like a storm inside.

Jesus does not promise that nothing difficult will ever happen. He does promise that His people can trust Him, pray, and walk through hard things with Him.

Talk about it

  1. Why do you think the disciples were afraid?
  2. What did Jesus do that surprised them?
  3. What is something that sometimes makes children your age feel afraid?
  4. Who are trusted adults you can talk to when something feels too big?
  5. What could you pray the next time you feel worried?

Put it into practice

  • STOP: Notice what you are feeling.
  • PRAY: Tell God exactly what is making you afraid.
  • REMEMBER: Think about a Scripture truth you know.
  • TALK: Tell a parent, guardian, teacher, or trusted church leader when you need help.
  • CHOOSE: Take the next wise step instead of letting fear control you.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, thank You for being with me. When I am afraid, help me remember that You are greater than what scares me. Give me wisdom to pray, trust You, and ask for help when I need it. Amen.

WEEKLY CHALLENGE

Take the lesson with you.

Each day this week, name one worry and turn it into a short prayer. Then tell a parent or guardian one thing you learned about trusting God.

FOR PARENTS & GUARDIANS

Continue the conversation at home.

Your child studied Mark 4:35–41 and learned that faith does not mean denying fear. It means bringing fear to Jesus, remembering His authority, and taking wise next steps.

Ask:

  • What part of the story do you remember best?
  • What did Jesus show the disciples about who He is?
  • What is one worry we can pray about together this week?

Home practice:

Read Mark 4:35–41 together once more. Let your child retell the story in their own words, then pray together about one real-life concern.
